The Celestial Dance of Beijing Traffic

At first, driving in Beijing can seem to be very chaotic as no one seems willing to follow any particular traffic laws. However, I have discovered that it moves according to two very simple principles.

1. See a hole, fill a hole. If there is a gap beside you or diagonal to you, move your car to fill it. It doesn't matter if you need to travel that direction or not. If you don't fill it, someone else will.

2. Need a hole, make a hole. If you need to cross three lanes of traffic to get to your exit or you're stuck behind the driver going 20 kmph in the passing lane, just force your way over into the next lane of traffic. Most of the time, they will yield.

Darude Day

Cool points for anyone who gets the title. Last night, Beijing suffered a monumentous sandstorm. Everything is covered in a light orange coat of dust. The sun is still hidden behind a wall of smog and dust.

On the ride in to work today, I started to get one of those headaches. You know, the kind you get after eating a pound of sand.

Officer Clay Mache

In the middle of Jingguomenwai Street headed toward 5th ring road, the city is building some sort of overpass. In the lane where they are building a support column, behind several warning barrels is the always on-duty Officer Clay Mache.
